Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria, estimated 300 square kilometers, located on a group of islands endowed with creeks and a lagoon. Lagos has a population of nearly 13 million and is projected to be one of the world's five largest cities in the next years.
It grew from a small fishing and farming settlement and a Portuguese trading post in the fifteenth century. Later it fell into the hands of the British. In 1862 the British Government declared Lagos a British Colony, in 1960 Nigeria declared independence from Britain.
